The Semiconductor Aliance was created with the aim of turning Catalonia into a reference point for the sector in Europe
The founding act marks the start of the initiative, made up of various departments of the Generalitat, companies and research and innovation agents, who will work together with the aim of consolidating Catalonia as one of the poles of reference for the semiconductor industry in Europe
On the 29th of June, the public-private initiative, announced in May: “The Semiconductor and Chip Alliance of Catalonia” was definitively established. This initiative will bring together the agents of these ecosystems to lead the transformation and consolidation of Europe.
In addition to this project, the Government has already been promoting other actions in this field on semiconductors, such as the deployment of support programs for business and technological projects to reinforce the result that is to be achieved.
It is currently in the development phase, but it has great growth potential, since it has 86 semiconductor companies in Catalonia, as well as 3,700 researchers involved in research projects in this field. 81% of the companies in the sector in Catalonia are SMEs and 8% are startups.
The objective of the Alliance is promoting the growth and consolidation of the semiconductor, microelectronics, photonics and quantum ecosystem of Catalonia in order to achieve a competitive, innovative and sustainable economy. To achieve this, the Alliance focuses on the strategic axes for the Government: strengthening the chip value chain in Catalonia, its international connection, the creation and attraction of productive investment and the promotion of talent and research.
Together, what is also sought is to strengthen relations and the positioning of Catalonia, promoting the participation of the country in European initiatives for the development of this ecosystem.
The act served for the integration of the Board of the Alliance, the governing body of this new initiative, to the Department of Business and Labor. The project has also been promoted by other departments, such as Economy and Finance and Research and Universities, and with the participation of the Presidency and Foreign Action and European Union departments. In addition, through ACCIÓ, the technical and administrative support necessary for the development of the functions of the Board will be provided.
