Barcelona will become European capital of urban mobility and will lead a worldwide innovation community

• MOBILus, an international public-private platform, has a budget of €1,600 M
• The aim of the EIT Urban Mobility project is to find solutions to the challenges imposed by urban mobility

The European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) chose the MOBILus -Mobility for Liveable Urban Spaces project —leaded by Barcelona in partnership with another 12 cities, 17 companies and 18 universities, a total of 48  partners from 15 countries— aiming at leading the Knowledge and Innovation Community on urban mobility within the EU at least till 2026.

The MOBILus project, shaped as a European multinational public-private platform, has a budget of €1,600 million, 400 of which will be contributed by the EU through the EIT. The remaining 1,200 will be contributed by the partners of the innovation community. This research has been planned for a minimum of 7 years, extendable to 15. The first results are expected to be published by 2020.

The aim of the EIT Urban Mobility project is to look for solutions to the urban mobility challenges and to find new uses for urban spaces so as to guaranteeing accessibility, sustainability, and the efficiency of the transport systems. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that the activity developed by the MOBILus consortium will stimulate and support economic and research activities aiming at driving competitiveness to the European mobility sector.

This project temporary headquarters will be set up at Ca l’Alier, at Sant Martí district. From there, networking with the remaining partners and the 4 secondary offices —research hubs— of Copenhagen, Munich, Prague and Helmond will be coordinated.

Leaded by Barcelona’s town hall, MOBILus is a project made up by the public, educational, and business sectors, with partners such as Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya or University College London, the BMW group or other cities like Copenhagen.

The EIT will fund the project with an initial injection of €4 million so as to be operational ASAP. From 2020 onwards, the investment will grow gradually up to €80 million.
