  • • 3-D printing is having a strong impact on health-related industries in Catalonia

Barcelona recently hosted In(3D)ustry From Needs to Solutions, a fair with which the Catalan capital hopes to consolidate its place as a benchmark in this sector, bringing together top companies and experts in the 3-D printing industry. The fair featured the latest news in 3-D printing technology applied to sectors like healthcare, automobiles, aeronautics, retail and architecture, among others.

3-D printing technology is growing around the world, transforming industry and, therefore, all sectors of the economy and job markets, by creating new jobs for the coming years and impacting approximately 420 professional profiles, as reflected in the report Impact and opportunities of 3D printing on employment by Barcelona Activa. This is a technological reality that goes hand in hand with innovation and makes companies more competitive by cutting time and costs.

In Catalonia, which is becoming a global benchmark, 3-D printing is having a strong impact on sectors associated with healthcare, biomedicine, automobiles, metalwork, machinery and chemicals. Nearly ten companies design and build additive manufacturing machinery that can optimize highly complex materials. Noteworthy among these is HP, which has a center in Sant Cugat and develops numerous applications for health. The company also has an R&D laboratory where more than 400 engineers are developing digital printing technology and products, including 3-D.

Furthermore, the Barcelona City Council –through Barcelona Activa– has set up the Ateneus de Fabricació network of public spaces open to anyone, where people can learn and experiment with digital manufacturing machines. The Parc Tecnològic de Promoció Industrial features manufacturing and exhibition spaces for 3-D printing developed in Barcelona.
