The blue economy, linked to the sustainable exploitation of marine resources, is growing strongly in Catalonia. According to the latest data, this sector already has more than 1,000 companies that generate a total turnover of 5.5 billion euros. This figure consolidates the blue economy as a key piece for the economic and environmental development of the territory.

An expanding sector

The blue economy includes activities such as fishing, aquaculture, coastal tourism, shipbuilding and marine renewable energies. In Catalonia, this sector has not only grown in number of companies, but has also become an important engine for job creation, creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

The sustained growth of this sector responds to the growing demand for sustainable solutions and the commitment of companies to the protection of the marine environment. It is also the result of the impulse of the Catalan Government and European institutions, which are committed to developing a green and circular economy.

Opportunities and challenges

The Minister for Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda, David Mascort, stressed the importance of the blue economy for the sustainability of the region. “We must take advantage of the opportunities offered by this sector, without compromising marine resources,” he said. However, he also pointed out the need to continue investing in technology and innovation to ensure long-term sustainable growth.

With a privileged location in the Mediterranean, Catalonia has great potential to continue leading this sector and generate new economic opportunities linked to the marine environment.
