South Korea’s Iljin will invest 600 million to manufacture battery components in Catalonia
The factory will employ 500 people in Mont-Roig del Camp (Tarragona) by 2024.
The South Korean group Iljin Materials will open a factory in Mont-roig del Camp (Tarragona) where it will manufacture one of the basic and most advanced components of car batteries. The investment will be around 600 million euros and will be the largest in the industrial field in Catalonia in the last fifteen years.
Iljin Materials is dedicated to the manufacture of elecfoil, ultra-thin copper sheets used in lithium batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage, as well as for electronic products.
The company expects the factory to be operational by 2024 and expects to generate 500 direct jobs with its inauguration. Moreover, according to the multinational, its medium- and long-term project is to convert the Tarragona facilities into the group’s largest factory in the world.
The Mont-roig plant will be Iljin’s first in Europe, after having analysed other possible locations in Eastern, Northern and Western Europe. It will have a production capacity of 25,000 tonnes per year. However, the multinational’s objective is to have a capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year as a final project in Mont-roig.
