According to data recorded in 2017 and offered by the European Patent Office (EPO), Catalonia leaded the requesting for patents within Spain. In particular, 37.6% of the total amount of patent requests were made in Catalonia, comparing to the 35.1% of 2016. In absolute figures, from the 1,676 Spanish patents, 633 were Catalonian. Barcelona leads the cities’ ranking, with 565 patents requested, before the 326 from Madrid.
