  • • Exports from Barcelona were up 3% between January and June

While Catalan exports were up 2% year-on-year in the first semester and totaled €32.54 billion – a figure that makes up 25.4% of all sales abroad from Spain – exports from the province of Barcelona for the period from January to June posted 3% growth and hit a new all-time record. This data is from the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

Furthermore, the Informe de conjuntura socioeconòmica de la província de Barcelona for the second quarter of this year compiled by the Barcelona Regional Council highlights that the province of Barcelona had exported goods valued at €9 billion in the first two months of the second quarter of 2016, which is 8% higher than the same period the previous year.

Therefore, Barcelona continues to be the Spanish province that exports the most, well ahead of the second on the list: Madrid, with exports valued at €4.5 billion. By type of goods, vehicle manufacturingchemical and pharmaceutical industriesmachinery manufacturingfood industry and garment making stand out in terms of volume and year-on-year variation.

The report also highlights that 2,850 new businesses were created in Barcelona in the second quarter of 2016, the highest figure in recent years for the same period, with a year-on-year increase of 5%. The total number of companies in the second quarter was 183,192.

Finally, the report from the Barcelona Regional Council also highlights that Barcelona received more than 3 million tourists in the second quarter of this year. According to the Hotel Occupancy Survey, the total number of tourists was 3,262,532, 5.8% more than last year.
