  • The number of companies founded in October totalled 1,224
  • Catalonia was a national leader in terms of new company creation last year

According to provisional data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE)- the Institut Nacional d’Estadística, which were published on 12 December, the number of mercantile companies founded in Catalonia during October increased by 20.5% compared to the month of September reaching 1,224 new companies.

Catalonia was the third most successful Spanish region in terms of the creation of new companies, behind the Community of Madrid – with 1,709 companies (+ 5%) and Andalusia, with 1,260 companies (+5.4%).

Of the 1,224 companies created in Catalonia, the vast majority (1,218) were limited companies, with a capital of 102.8 million euros, while the rest were public limited companies, with a capital of 2 million euros. They totalled 104.9 million euros, 14.5% more than in October last year.

Last year Catalonia led the creation of companies in Spain, with a balance of 22,194 companies that were founded throughout the year, which resulted in an increase of 18% compared to 2015, and the highest figure in the entire crisis. Catalonia accounts for 21.6% of the total number of companies launched in Spain over the last twelve months, which numbered 102,464, showing an 8% increase with respect to figures for 2015.
