  • Amazon Pantry allows customers to purchase products they would normally get from the supermarket
  • Catalonia’s great strategic location is key to the launch of this new service

Amazon kicked off a new 28,000 m² logistics center in Castellbisbal, Barcelona for a new service called Amazon Pantry. This is the company’s third investment in six months. Approximately 200 people are expected to be hired for the center over the next three years.

This new center, which will ship products to Spain and southern Europe, will allow customers to purchase products they would normally get from the supermarket, except for fresh items, and have them delivered within a day. Spain is the fifth place in the world to offer the Amazon Pantry service, after the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan.

It is, in short, Amazon’s third show of faith in Barcelona and Catalonia since the summer. Specifically, the first was confirmation of the 63,000 m² logistics center in El Prat, currently being built with an investment of €200 million and expected to create 1,500 new jobs. The second was the launch of the Prime Now immediate delivery service, based in a remodeled industrial building in Barcelona’s Eixample district, serving 26 towns in the metropolitan area, even delivering fresh food products.

The reason Spain has been chosen for the Pantry service is, according to Amazon, Catalonia’s excellent strategic location, which was also why it chose the region for its logistic center. From Catalonia, shipments can be delivered quickly anywhere in Spain or southern Europe, including France and Italy.
