BBVA has launched an ambitious housing rehabilitation project in Catalonia, financed with Next Generation funds from the European Union. This project, which is considered the largest of its kind in the region, will be carried out in four buildings located in the municipality of Vic, Barcelona.

According to the Catalan Habitat Agency, the energy efficiency of buildings will increase between 62.89% and 63.57%. This rehabilitation covers a total of 114 homes, 35 commercial premises, 230 parking spaces and 140 storage rooms.

In financial terms, the project requires a total investment of 7 million euros, of which 2.6 million euros will be subsidized.

Work is scheduled to span approximately 15 months, with a completion date of July 2025.

The BBVA project not only responds to the need to modernize the real estate stock, but is also aligned with the recent European regulations on energy efficiency, a regulation that seeks to reduce emissions of polluting gases and energy consumption in residential buildings.

Under the new guidelines, by 2030, all new construction buildings must be zero-emission, and by 2050, complete decarbonization must be achieved in both new construction and existing buildings.

In Spain, the challenge is particularly relevant because almost half of the homes were built before 1980. According to data from the INE, 81% of buildings have a low energy rating, between categories E and G. This context highlights the importance of initiatives such as BBVA’s, which play a crucial role in improving energy efficiency and promoting more sustainable practices in the country’s real estate sector.
