Barcelona, logistics capital of the Mediterranean

Once again this year, Barcelona became the logistics capital of the Mediterranean with the International Logistics and Material Handling Exhibition (SIL) from 6 to 8 June. Organized by the Zona Franca Consortium at the Montjuïc fairgrounds, SIL 2017 brought together more than 600 participating companies (up 5% from the previous year), 40% of which are international, coming from 38 different countries, and 3,600 professionals.

At this 19^th annual SIL event, with the slogan “Our success, your business growth”, there were more than 200 business events, over 100 new global projects presented, 227 world-renowned speakers and 800 logistics managers from the top companies in the world. The most important forum in the logistics sector featured a new space to connect companies with job offers and interested candidates, a meeting point, recruitment area and networking space.

Coinciding with the beginning of SIL, the first edition of the eDelivery Barcelona Expo & Congress was also held, focusing on the latest trends in the distribution and delivery sector. Furthermore, the expo included events like the 12^th Mediterranean Logistics and Transport Forum, a national and international benchmark in debate on sector news and policies; the 7^th Med Ports Summit, which establishes a framework for the port sector in Europe, the Middle East and Africa; the 3^rd Latin American Logistics and Transport Summit; and the 17^th SIL Logistics Directors Symposium.

Additionally, the doors have just closed on the 19^th Supply Chain & Logistics Summit & Expo, which took place in Barcelona from 19 to 21 June. This event brought together more than 600 supply chain and logistics leaders from Europe, the Middle East and Africa to debate the future of the sector.

These events aren’t held in Barcelona by chance. Catalonia is a first-rate goods transport and logistics hub. It has two of the main ports on the Mediterranean (Barcelona and Tarragona), and is a natural gateway from the center and eastern areas of the Iberian Peninsula and the southern coast of the Mediterranean to the center of Europe. With this strategic location, and approximately 40,000 logistics and transport companies and 6,097,527 m² of space devoted to logistics activities, it is currently the largest logistics center in southern Europe and the Mediterranean.
