The Port of Barcelona, a leading project thanks to the new 5G network
This network represents a significant advance for port companies, providing the necessary connections
The Port of Barcelona has launched a private 5G network in collaboration with Orange, positioning itself as a leading project in Europe. This advanced infrastructure will allow innovative technological solutions in the port ecosystem.
With an investment of 3.6 million euros over five years, this network represents a significant advance for port companies, providing the necessary connections to face the growing level of automation in the management of tools and services.
Advantages include a backup network in case of main system failures and the ability to install cameras and sensors in areas without access to fiber optics. This pioneering service covers the entire port, including the surrounding two nautical miles.
The port police and security and emergency forces will also benefit, allowing fluid and real-time communication between agents, facilitating surveillance with more than 400 CCTV cameras and drones connected to the network.
In addition, the new 5G network will improve the efficiency of rail transport in the port, thanks to the high mobility of the connections. Its resistance to electromagnetic interference will optimize connectivity management and data transmission in Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems.
Lluís Salvadó, president of the Port of Barcelona, stated: “The deployment of this new network will transform the Port of Barcelona into a more efficient and innovative infrastructure, offering our customers the technology necessary to stay at the forefront.”
