Catalonia exceeds 3.8 million workers in May and reduces unemployment to the lowest level since 2008
Unemployment also fell, putting the jobless rate at its lowest level for a May month since 2008
The month of May marked a turning point in the Catalan labor market, registering a new record of more than 3.8 million workers. This historic milestone anticipates a summer period full of dynamism and opportunities in the regional labor market. According to data provided by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy of Spain, there is a notable increase of 90,131 workers compared to the same period of the previous year, reflecting a growth of 2.43%.
Furthermore, the decrease in unemployment continues, with a reduction of 6,248 people on the list of job seekers compared to April 2024. This decrease of 1.85% compared to the previous month places the unemployment rate at its lowest level for a month of May since 2008.
The Secretary of Labor of Catalonia, Enric Vinaixa, highlighted the magnitude of these achievements as “unprecedented figures”, highlighting Catalonia’s leadership role in reducing unemployment at the national level. Although he recognized the need to continue improving, especially with regard to the quality of employment, Vinaixa celebrated the significant reduction in youth unemployment and in people over 45 years of age. Regarding the seasonality of employment, he noted a notable improvement compared to previous years, which suggests greater stability in the labor market throughout the year.
