According to the report ‘Barcelona, Digital Port of the Mediterranean’, published by Digital Realty and DE-CIX, it is projected that by 2025 Barcelona’s data centers will reach a capacity of 173 MW. This would translate into an economic impact of 7.23 billion euros in GDP and the creation of 2,200 jobs.

To achieve digital port status, the report highlights the need to develop a complete ecosystem that includes data centers, neutral points, cloud service providers, communications networks, system integrators and consultants.

The report also foresees the creation of 1,030 jobs during the construction phase, 713 in the operation phase and 385 more throughout the final process. Experts highlight the multiplier effect of the data center industry, which generates seven euros for every euro invested.

In the presentation of the study, representatives of data companies expressed their confidence in Barcelona as an emerging digital center, thanks to its infrastructure of submarine cables, communications network and strategic location in the Mediterranean.

Companies like DE-CIX, which already has its headquarters in Barcelona, are contributing to the development of the city’s digital ecosystem, betting on its future as a leading data center in the region.
