The Urban Development Master Plan (PDU) Biopol-Granvia of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat has been definitively approved by the Urban Planning Commission of the Government of Catalonia after years of procedures and legal disputes. This ambitious urban and economic project covers 8% of the city’s territory, with an estimated investment of 230 million euros.

The main objective of the PDU is to create a new center of economic activity focused on biomedical research and health sciences, with the construction of more than 556,000 square meters of space for economic activities. The project includes changes such as the undergrounding of the Granvia de L’Hospitalet and improvements to access to the Llobregat River, as well as the rehabilitation of historic buildings.

Biopol, a hub of companies related to biomedicine, will be the core of this development, with the participation of institutions such as the Bellvitge Hospital and the University of Barcelona. It is expected that this biomedical cluster will have a significant impact on the labor market and the Catalan economy.

Although it has received political support, some local entities have expressed environmental concerns and have initiated legal actions to stop the project. However, it is expected that the PDU will come into force once it is published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC).
