The German company Covestro inaugurated its new chlorine production plant in Tarragona this June, a project that represents an investment of around 200 million euros and the creation of 50 new job opportunities. 

Pioneers in the start-up of this new chlorine production plant in the world based on ODC (oxygen depolarised cathode) technology, it will provide Tarragona with an efficient, independent and permanent supply of chlorine and caustic soda, two essential materials in the chemical industry. In addition to being a raw material for many other sectors.

Covestro’s growth project in Tarragona received the backing of ACCIO-Catalonia Trade & Investment, the agency in charge of promoting business competitiveness of the Department of Enterprise and Employment.

The inauguration of the project was attended by Pere Aragonès, President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Àngel Xifré, the Secretary for Enterprise and Competitiveness and Director General of ACCO-Catalonia Trade & Investment, Sucheta Govil, Covestro’s Global CCO and Andrea Firenze, Managing Director of Covestro and General Manager of the company in Spain.

In relation to the importance of industry for the country, Pere Aragonès emphasised the need to promote the reindustrialisation of Catalonia with an ambitious, innovative vision and an unwavering commitment to sustainability and the environment. In this sense, he stated that this approach will allow Catalonia to regain its position as one of the most industrialised regions in Europe.

The political leader expressed his gratitude and satisfaction at Covestro’s new investment in Catalonia, highlighting the clear commitment that the company has shown to the country over the years. Pere Aragonès also took the opportunity to recognise the four centres that Covestro has in Catalonia, which employ more than a thousand people. He also assured that the government will stand by the company on its path towards generating shared prosperity.

In summary, Pere Aragonès stressed the importance of promoting the reindustrialisation of Catalonia with an ambitious and sustainable mindset. He thanked Covestro for its investment in the country and highlighted the company’s commitment to Catalonia over time. He also reaffirmed the government’s support for the goal of generating joint prosperity.
