Creating the conditions for social and economics progress

Barcelona City Council has announced an investment of 40.5 million euros to promote and develop the blue economy until 2025.

Last October, Barcelona City Council announced a new government measure to boost the blue economy, proposing a strategic plan, with 43 measures and 15 projects, in which it will allocate 40.5 million euros to improve the economy, competitiveness and sustainability of activities related to the sea, such as fishing, transport, nautical, logistics, tourism and science.

The City Council will mobilise more than 52,000 square metres for the development of this project and highlights the new use of Barcelona’s Port Olímpic, which until now was monopolised by nightlife, and the area will be oriented towards the installation of emerging blue economy companies.

The blue economy sector already has 15,806 workers in Barcelona (1.4% of current employment) and generates 3,826 million euros in annual turnover, representing 4.3% of Barcelona’s GDP.
